Apartment repainted
The apartment block has been repainted for the 2007 season; formerly a vivid shade of green, the apartment exterior is now a very pale coffee colour - which looks extremely attractive against the blue of the pool and the sky! The neighbouring Nur Hotel has been painted the same colour - less distinctive than before, but slightly more gentle!
Dalaman Airport
Since November 2005, Dalaman Airport has remained open all year round. The new terminal is also now up and running - a vast improvement on the old building. This, coupled with the completion of the road tunnel through the mountain (cutting the journey time by around 10 minutes) makes Kalkan a viable destination whatever the time of year.
It is anticipated that the Lycian Coast will become a recognised winter destination and it probably won't be long before some of the low-cost operators take advantage of the increased demand. Furthermore, with the close proximity of the Taurus Mountains (the peaks of which remain snow covered from December to May) it seems possible that the area will become a winter sports destination, similar to Cyprus.
We will be happy to discuss prices for long-term winter lets of the apartment.
Turkey - EU membership
The Turkish Government formally applied for membership of the EU in October 2005 and this is already leading to a vast transformation to Turkey's economy and political agenda.
In keeping with the objective of full EU membership within 10 years, the Government has introduced reforms in several key areas of the economy, not least a revaluation of the Turkish Lira - the introduction of the New Turkish Lira (YTL) at a rate of 1 YTL = 1,000,000 old Turkish Lira. Other reforms that are either underway or are shortly to be introduced include:
Domestic mortgage arrangements to be permitted for Turkish nationals
Major social security reforms
Restructuring of the public sector
Privatisation of a number of key State-owned industries
Measures to reduce unemployment
Measures to increase the efficiency of Turkish agriculture
Continued measures to reduce inflation (now down to around 8% pa, from over 20% pa three years ago)
New bus station in Kalkan
The current bus "station" occupies a position just off the main roundabout in the centre of Kalkan, and at busy times it can get rather congested as it is situated right on the edge of the pedestrianised area. The very sensible decision to build a new, purpose-built station was taken and, fortunately for guests at our apartment, the new station will be only a few minutes' walk away - in the opposite direction from the centre of the village.
We understand that the new bus station is nearing completion and may be in use by the end of the 2007 season.
